An incredible War of the Worlds lightning bolt was captured illuminating the UK coast as temperatures reached 34.8C on the hottest day of the year so far.
The huge electric charge was pictured striking the Bristol Channel between Porthcawl in Wales, and North Devon in England, overnight, on Sunday (11 August).
An amazing image of the spectacle was captured by photographer, Stephen Jones, as reported by What’s The Jam.

It was likened to a scene from Steven Spielberg’s 2005 War of the Worlds blockbuster, starring Tom Cruise.
In the movie, lightning bolts are used by aliens to travel to Earth.
“The storm showed up on my lightning tracker app but I wasn’t expecting it to come to anything,” Mr Jones said.
“I am only five minutes from the seafront so I headed down to try and get some pictures.
“This was taken as the storm was heading away from me.”
