A restaurant has left diners “disgusted” after adding an unusual item to its seafood menu: raw octopus egg.

The delicacy has elicited a very strong response online, with people saying the ingredient “should be illegal”.

A video showcasing the dish, which is served at Koji in Pickering, Singapore, has over 1.2m views and over 13,000 likes.

The eggs served raw with an accompanying sauce, a general ingredient or as topping for sushi.

The restaurant (@‌kojisushibars) calls the dish ‘Tako Tamago’, which is also used in Japanese cooking, but this is traditionally a candied baby octopus with a quail’s head stuffed in the head, reports What’s The Jam.

In the clip, the egg can be seen being blowtorched and cut open, as it jiggles.Someone then picks it up with chopsticks.

Koji’s claims the raw dish has a “delicate and creamy texture” and is chock-full of important nutrients like protein, vitamin B12 and Omega 3.

They also recommend ordering it as a single dish or even as a side to accompany another dish.

While it may be a gourmet food, the appearance of the raw egg – and its origin – has not gone down well with people online.

One person said: “We will be okay without eating that thanks.”

“This is horrible. I think we’re doing this planet plenty of harm, we can skip this completely unnecessary one,” said someone else.

“That should be illegal…” stated someone else. “F****n disgusting knowing the lifecycle of an octopus and still eating it’s babies humans discuss me,” added one angry user.

Another added: “This is freaking wrong. So many potential octopus being wasted for a quirky expensive trend.”

However, despite some people’s negative response, others are keen to try the new dish.

“Wow I want to try!!” exclaimed one user.

Paxton said: “I want to try!!!! Is it like Ikura?”
