A library user has returned an overdue poetry book after 93 years.

The book – titled ‘Heart Throbs: The Old Scrap Book’ by various authors – was first published in 1905.

It was checked out from the local library in November 1931.

At the time, James Macdonald was PM in the UK, and Herbert Hoover was US President.

The tome was returned when a relative came across it in an elderly aunt’s house.

The book was taken back to Licking County Library in Newark, Ohio, US.

A library spokesperson said: “This book is 93 years overdue.

“A patron recently returned this book of poetry after finding it in her great aunt’s house.

“Fifty thousand people contributed to this book.”

The library added: “It even has a neat little bookmark left in it.”

The book also had a list of rules from when the library was called the Public Library of Newark.

The rules state that there should be a fine of two cents for every day it is overdue.

However, the library spokesperson pointed out: “It’s a good thing we’re now fine free.”

One local said: “After 93 years, the bill is still under $680.

“It would be funnier if they paid the bill.”
