Mountains were lit up like a giant strobe light show during a spectacular storm that left locals fearing everything from UFOs to earthquakes.
Dazzling white and blue flashes illuminated hillsides, valleys and mountain slopes as powerful electrical storms raged across Chiapas in southern Mexico.
The dramatic display was accompanied by booming thunderclaps and heavy rain, turning the night sky into a breathtaking natural light show.

Residents captured footage of the phenomenon last Wednesday (27 May) during a spell of intense storm activity linked to the region’s rainy season.
Many locals said they had never seen anything like it.
The unusual sight sparked a wave of speculation online, with some linking the flashes to so-called “earthquake lights” – a mysterious phenomenon sometimes reported before major seismic events.
Others went even further, suggesting the lights could be linked to paranormal activity or even UFOs, as reported by What’s The Jam.
One local said: “This is not of this world, clearly paranormal activity or a UFO. The mountains of Chiapas hold many ancestral secrets.”

Another person added: “UFOs preparing for something big in Chiapas? The lights move between the trees as if they were intelligent, these aren’t normal lightning strikes.”
Rafael said: “Those are extraterrestrial ships that have been there since before the Mayans, intervening for some purpose.”
Some residents also recalled seeing similar lights before the devastating Chiapas earthquake in 2017, fuelling rumours that another major tremor could be on the way.

But officials were quick to dismiss the theories.
Authorities said the spectacular flashes were caused by storm clouds interacting with the mountainous landscape, intensifying electrical discharges and creating the dramatic visual effects.
They stressed there is no evidence linking the phenomenon to earthquakes and confirmed that no official seismic alerts have been issued.
