The shirt worn by Pelé when he scored twice in the 1958 World Cup final is set to go under the hammer for a staggering £4.5million.

The iconic Brazil number 10 jersey was worn by the football legend as he inspired his country to a famous 5-2 victory over hosts Sweden and helped secure their first-ever World Cup triumph.

Pelé was just 17 years old when he scored his historic brace in Stockholm.

And he remains the youngest player ever to score in a World Cup final.

Now, 68 years after that unforgettable night, the shirt is being offered for sale in what could become one of the most valuable pieces of football memorabilia ever sold, as reported by Whats The Jam.

The final took place at Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm on 29 June 1958 and marked the moment Pelé announced himself to the world.

The Brazilian superstar would go on to win two more World Cups and score an astonishing 1,281 goals during his glittering career.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Pelé died in 2022 at the age of 82.

The historic shirt will be sold by Sotheby’s as the sole lot in its “The Beautiful Game” auction in New York.

Bidding opens on 29 June – exactly 68 years to the day since Brazil’s landmark victory.

A spokesperson for Sotheby’s stated: “The authenticity of the shirt has been attested to by four members of the 1958 World Cup-winning squad.

“In addition to Dida himself, three further champions have confirmed the provenance of the number ten: Nilton Santos, Orlando Pecanha, and Mario Zagallo, all of whom visited the museum and provided their authentication.

“The shirt was subsequently offered at public auction in September 2004, at Christies, at which point its full documented history was set out formally in writing by the then-owner.

“The shirt has not been exhibited to the public in over two decades.

“What is offered here is not simply a shirt.

“It is the garment worn by the greatest footballer who ever lived on the night his reign began, passed by his own hand to a friend and preserved with care for more than six decades.

“Its historical importance is without parallel in the football memorabilia market.”
