Archeologists have uncovered over 30 different shipwrecks submerged at the bottom of a lake.

The team has been working since 2022 to find vessels lost to the depths of Lake Constance.

The body of water is a 63km-long central European lake that borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The archeologists shared their findings this week (12 August).

The team – led by Professor Dirk Krausse for the State Office for Monument Preservation for the Stuttgart Regional Council in Germany – have been recording, documenting and making historical assessments of wrecks at all depths of the lake.

Since 2022, with the help of modern geophysical methods, a diving team, and diving robots, several interesting new discoveries have already been made.

The discovered and documented wrecks provide insight not only into historical shipbuilding technology, but also into the cargo carried by the famous sailing ships on Lake Constance.

Alexandra Ulisch, a research associate on the project, said: “Wrecks are far more than just lost vessels.

“They are true time capsules that preserve the stories and craftsmanship of days long gone.

“Whether it’s the Titanic, HMS Terror, Säntis, or Lady Jay – all examples impressively demonstrate that wrecks fascinate people.”

The project is currently ongoing, but the findings are already providing fascinating insight.

As it stands, 31 unknown wrecks have been found in Lake Constance so far.

Further results are expected to be announced at the completion of the project in summer 2027.
