Unopened box of Pokémon cards sells for £19,500 at auction

A box of unopened Pokémon cards has sold for £19,500 at auction.

The cards went on sale in shops just over 23 years old.

They were hugely popular with school kids in the late nineties and early noughties

It contains 36 packs of cards which usually sold for £2.50 at the time.

Each pack contains 11 cards totalling 396.

It meant in this lot each card sold for £49.24 each as opposed to the 22p worth of Pokémon cards at the time.

The 1st Edition Neo Genesis Booster Box was described as being in “fantastic condition.”

Although the auctioneer Ewbanks said there was a small “split in the seal.”

It was the most expensive lot in its Pokémon auction.

The listing reads: “Pokemon TCG. Pokemon 1st Edition Neo Genesis Sealed Booster Box.

“Neo Genesis is the first main expansion of the Neo Series of the Pokémon Trading Card game.

“It is based on Pokémon Gold and Silver, featuring popular Generation II Pokémon such as Lugia and Typhlosion.

“This English expansion was released on December 16, 2000.

“This item is from the collection of the former Managing Director of Wizards of the Coast in the UK, Stephen Wilks.

“An image of his previous business card and a Wizards of the Coast brochure is included for provenance but please be aware only the brochure is included in the sale.

“Box is sealed and in fantastic condition, corners are sharp.

“Minor split in the seal at the back of the box.”

Andrew Ewbank, senior partner of the auction house in Woking, Surrey, said: “This has been another hit sale with collectors.

“With sale after sale hitting the heights, since we led the way in the UK in setting up a dedicated Trading Cards department, it has been noticeable that other auction houses have started to follow suit.

“We are proud to have played a significant part in taking this field mainstream in the UK art market and look forward to presenting more landmark collections that we have in the pipeline.”
