A Michelin-trained chef has created a bizarre dish for the festive season: a Christmas sandwich with cat food as the main protein – and it smells just as gross as you might imagine.

Alex Sewell, who worked at Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck restaurant, has come up with meal that is weirder than Tesco’s birthday cake sandwich and Aldi’s lickable wrapping paper.

Introducing the cat food Christmas sarnie – made from KatKin’s GOBBLE product, which is a 100% fresh turkey recipe, served on scrocchiarella bread with caramelised Roscoff onions with tawny port, cranberry chilli jam, melted brie and gravy mayonnaise.

To make it even more feline, there’s also a dollop of KatKin stuffing and a slaw of (pork) pangrattato made from the OINK item.

What’s The Jam was offered a chance to try the sandwich but things didn’t quite go to plan.

On the upside, the delivery was smooth and the meal is nicely wrapped.

In theory, it might have been a tasty dish but unfortunately it smelled so vicious that we simply couldn’t take a bite.

The pungent odour of cat food – though, who knows, perhaps it was a placebo effect – was so strong that this editor couldn’t even face being in the same room as the sandwich.
It was left in the kitchen with the hope that the smell would dissipate enough for a taste later on.

Sadly, it didn’t – and the dish was swiftly chucked in a bin outside.

Sewell, from Good Food Studio, likely tried his best but then again, this is “human-quality” meat usually served to cats, so we are not all that surprised by the stinky smell.

He said: “It’s been a joy to help turn KatKin’s 100% fresh meat cat food into something this fun and festive – a delicious Christmas sandwich!

“They’ve made it easy to create something that not only looks and tastes brilliant, but also highlights what good cat nutrition should be – the same quality meat we eat.”

While there may well be some people out there who could enjoy this, we’ll stick to the usual turkey this year.
