Co-op has extended its online grocery hours to help families caught short during the back-to-school rush.

The convenience retailer has created an additional 750,000 delivery slots beginning at 7am.

Orders can arrive in as little as 60 minutes, potentially helping parents who discover an empty bread bag or missing lunchbox essential shortly before the school run.

The earlier slots are available from more than 1,200 participating Co-op stores across the UK.

Customers can place orders through Co-op’s online shop or its delivery partners Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo, as reported by What’s The Jam?

Availability will depend upon the customer’s location and the opening hours of the participating store.

Gary Kisby, Co-op’s quick commerce trading director, said: “Every parent knows the feeling of getting everything ready for the new school year and then realising that something is missing.

“When life is busy enough, whether it is back to school or getting back into your usual work routine, quick online home delivery can bring forgotten lunchbox items to your door in minutes, giving families a convenient way to avoid last-minute stressful situations.”

The retailer is also promoting member prices, three-for-two deals and products included in its Aldi Price Match scheme.

Its back-to-school range covers sandwich ingredients, fruit and snacks, with offers varying between stores and online platforms.

Customers ordering directly from Co-op can currently get delivery from £1.99, subject to a £15 minimum spend.

The move comes amid growing competition between supermarkets to make groceries available outside traditional shopping hours.

Waitrose recently made extended rapid-delivery hours permanent at 35 UK stores following a trial during the World Cup.

Most participating Waitrose branches can now fulfil orders until midnight, while selected high-demand locations offer delivery around the clock.

Co-op’s latest change instead focuses on the other end of the day, giving customers access to more delivery slots from 7am.

Shoppers can enter their postcode through Co-op’s website or search on one of its delivery partners to establish whether the earlier service is available locally.
