A rebellion aiming to thwart plans for monster developments at world-famous Loch Ness has started gaining support.

The home of the legendary Nessie is the subject of several planning applications for pumping stations, wind farms and telecoms towers.

Now angry locals have banded together to form a group called Save Loch Ness to try and protect it.

They have started a petition and website dedicated to the cause, as reported by What’s The Jam.

The website states: “Many of us are blessed to be surrounded by the sweeping beauty and timeless mystery of Loch Ness created long, long ago by ‘The Cailleach’ – Scotland’s Winter Goddess.

“It has always been more than a mere body of water.

“Loch Ness is a cherished symbol of our indigenous cultural heritage, a sacred land that holds the whispers of our ancestors and the stories of the generations who came before us.

“Disturbingly, the integrity and sanctity of this beloved area are now under threat from aggressive industrialisation…

“We face the devastating prospect of this rural haven [being turned] into something entirely foreign to those who love and depend upon it.

“Plans include the construction of three new huge Pump Storage Hydro facilities. Wind farms on surrounding moorland from which pure water sources feed into Loch Ness.

“Associated infrastructure such as weir upgrades, pylons, roads, workers camps, heavy goods traffic and telecoms towers. Abstraction of water for green hydrogen production.

“All this will inevitably lead to irreversible environmental degradation, habitat destruction, and the loss of an irreplaceable part of our cultural heritage, deeply loved globally.

“We must act now to preserve this land not just for ourselves, but for the future generations who should have the same opportunity to experience its magic and tranquility.”

It adds: “This is a call to action for decision makers, legislators, environmental organisations, and concerned citizens around the world to come together to protect Loch Ness and our Highlands extending across our wider Celtic lands.

“We need legal protections and local sustainable economic strategies that honour both nature and heritage rather than erode them.”

The petition was launched on Monday (12 Jan) and by the time of writing on Wednesday, had gained 630 signatures.

The Save Loch Ness group added: “The level of information presented by GEE (Glen Earrach Energy) can seem bewildering.

“Whilst their team have had months/years to prepare a planning application, those affected by it are seemingly given weeks to respond…

“Our group consists of several members with relevant technical/professional experience relating to the areas covered by the Environmental Impact Assessment, and we are supported by a small (but growing) number of external professionals, consultants, and academics.

“For a project this scope, scale and complexity, we can never have enough expertise.

“So if you can assist us in scrutinising and sharing information on the application, then please do get in touch and join our wider team.”
