The protective clothing was worn by the then Princess of Wales on a visit to a factory.

It was embroidered with HRH The Princess of Wales in blue stitching.

The lab coat was manufactured by the Scottish firm Alexandra and labelled as Euro size 50.

The Royal visited the Interconnections Systems factory in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, on 9 December 1992.

It was the day her separation from husband Prince Charles, now King Charles the Third, was announced, as reported by What’s The Jam.

The factory visit was part of the Princess’s official duties.

The vendor, who worked as a team leader at the factory, recalled that the coat was left behind on a clothes hanger following Diana’s visit.

After asking for permission to take it, she was told she could keep it.

Remarkably, the coat has never been washed and has been stored in a wardrobe for over three decades.

It had a pre-sale estimate of £800 to £1,200.

Now it has been sold to a buyer from the northeast for £4,500.

The announcement of Diana’s separation marked a significant turning point.

The fairytale wedding was watched by nearly one billion viewers in 1981.

The couple formally divorced in 1996, and Diana’s tragic death followed just a year later in 1997.

After the sale, Jack Orgill, of auctioneers, Anderson and Garland, Newcastle upon Tyne, said: “This sale really had everything. It is a privilege to bring such exceptional items to the North East.”
