King Charles is hiring a gardener to look after his water garden as Brits face a hosepipe ban amid 31C (88F) scorching temperatures.

The famously green-fingered monarch is looking for someone to tend to his country’s retreat.

The role at the sprawling 20,459-acre Sandringham Estate, in Norfolk, involves maintaining and presenting the woodland and water gardens to the “highest horticultural standard”.

And it comes with a “generous package” and competitive salary, according to the listing.

The gardener will also be expected to engage with visitors, get involved with upcoming plans and projects, keep current on industry developments and share ideas.

It will mainly be a Monday to Friday job, but some weekend work will be needed.

The news comes as a hosepipe ban was announced in Yorkshire after the region saw one of its driest springs on record.

Yorkshire Water said a temporary use ban will come into effect from Friday (11 Jul), restricting the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash private vehicles, fill domestic pools or clean outdoor surfaces until there has been “significant rainfall” in the area.

The Environment Agency declared a drought in Yorkshire in June, following the driest spring for 132 years.

Currently, there are no hosepipe bans in place in Norfolk, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Anglian Water, the company responsible for water supply in the region, said it currently had no plans to introduce a ban this summer despite ongoing dry conditions.

But the situation was being closely monitored, and a ban remained a possibility if water levels continued to drop.

The Sandringham job description states: “The Gardens at Sandringham House have been developed in turn by each Monarch since 1863.

“And now include extensive Water Gardens, a highly ornamental Woodland Walk, formal planting schemes, rockwork by James Pulham, an array of mature, ancient and rare trees, a newly planted Arboretum and an on-site Nursery.

“The Gardens prides itself on being forward-thinking with an aim to enhance and develop the gardens and its living collections of plants.

“We work together to enrich our unique horticultural environment.

“As a team, we strive to encourage and motivate one another to continue to develop and learn.

“Joining an established team, this is an exciting opportunity as Sandringham Gardens embarks on innovative redevelopment projects, supporting their development, delivery, and maintenance, thereby expanding the legacy of the Gardens at Sandringham.”

It adds: “This is a full-time position working predominantly Monday to Friday.

“However, due to the nature of the role, flexibility will be required as there will be some weekend working.”

The gardens at Sandringham have two ornamental lakes, fed by natural springs and bordered by areas of rockwork.

A predicted third heatwave is set to hit the UK by the end of next week.

Job hopefuls need to get their CVs in by 25 July.
