Greggs has confirmed it is temporarily closing some of its stores as Britain swelters under a red heat warning.

The bakery chain announced that a number of branches will shut on 24 and 25 June in a bid to protect customers and staff during the extreme temperatures.

Among the affected locations is Greggs’ flagship Leicester Square store in central London, alongside branches in Wolverhampton, Luton, Gosport and Northampton.

Customers were informed of the closures in an email sent by the retailer on Tuesday morning, as reported by Whats The Jam.

The message said: “Just to let you know – the following shops will be temporarily closed on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June to protect our customers and colleagues during the severe hot weather.”

The stores are expected to reopen on Friday, subject to conditions improving.

The temporary closures come as much of the UK braces for soaring temperatures, with temperatures pushing well above 30 degrees.

The Met Office has issued a red heat warning for parts of the country, warning of significant impacts including travel disruption, pressure on health services and potential school closures.

To help with the heat, Greggs is also rolling out a new refreshing drink at stores that remain open.

From 25 June, the bakery chain will launch its new Iced Blueberry Matcha, a drink blending matcha green tea, semi-skimmed milk and blueberry syrup over ice, priced from £3.60.

New customers who download and sign up to the Greggs app will be able to claim the drink completely free through the app’s welcome reward.

It will also be available via Click + Collect and delivery services, including Just Eat and Uber Eats.

The Greggs stores temporarily closing due to the heat are:

  • Aldridge
  • Wolverhampton
  • Luton
  • Gosport
  • Trowbridge
  • Barnet
  • Marlborough
  • Wantage
  • Dudley
  • Northampton
  • Leicester Square, London
