A British diner has left people in stitches after taking it upon himself to fix a McDonald’s sign – and he’s since been made ‘Employee of the Month’.

Steve Lovell has a desk-based job where he spends most of his time on the phone.

With a love of tinkering and finding solutions to problems, the 50-year-old tries to think of other ways to make his “life more interesting”.

Most recently, this included fixing a glaring error while getting a takeaway.

Steve was at McDonald’s at the White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds when he spotted that the ‘D’ was missing.

And this just wouldn’t do.

So Steve took a photo to get the right scale, then created the letter before sticking it on with double tape.

His clever solution has left 56,000 people cracking up.

“For quite a while, I’ve been aware that the seating area of McDonald’s at this shopping centre had been missing the ‘D’”, he told What’s The Jam.

“Because it was small and at chest height, I had the means and will to do something about it.

“I took a photo to get the scale a couple of weeks beforehand, and then I got around to fixing it, as it had been mildly irritating me.

“I’d manually cut out the shape from some 5mm thick plastic often used in sign-making and stuck it on during a weekly visit.

“It wasn’t a perfect job, and it was only attached with standard double-sided tape.

“I hadn’t told McDonald’s because I was sure they couldn’t care less, and I wasn’t doing it for reward or recognition.”

Tragically, when Steve went back to visit the food chain a few days later, he spotted that someone had removed his handiwork.

But not before bringing people some real laughs and even getting him recognised by the shopping centre with a special honour.

They issued him an Employee of the Month certificate to keep for his good work.

But this wasn’t enough for Steve, who created yet another new ‘D’ and attached it to the sign.

He said: “Various people from the local area had already jokingly threatened that they’d remove my new addition and through the thousands of comments coming my way, I was advised that someone had indeed removed the plastic part I’d added.

“The shopping centre themselves joined in [on the fun] and humorously made me their Employee of the Month, despite me never having worked for them.

“A few people were making kinds of pilgrimages to the site to have their photo taken with a sign that was in disrepair again.

“I had to get my act together and sort it out.

“I went into the 3D modelling application Fusion 360 to model the counters.

“I did a test print and made some minor adjustments, then reprinted with white PLA filament.

“Then made a trip to the shopping centre again.”

James added: “Putting the D back in McDonald’s.”

Aus joked: “Thank you for your service.”

Gareth said: “Good job… someone owes ya at least a quarter pounder.”

Chloe added: “Legend.”

“The national hero we never knew we needed,” said someone else.

“This man wins the internet,” James joked.

“This is McStanding,” Billy added.

“Not all heroes wear capes,” Sam said.

For Steve, it has all been worth it.

He added: “Not many people would notice a sign missing bits from it.

“Fewer still would be bothered by it and practically no one at all would bother to spend time and effort actually rectifying it.

“The fix wasn’t even for McDonald’s benefit as some people claim.

“It was for me and anyone else that would have noticed.”

Jam Press has contacted McDonald’s for comment.
