A thrifty first-time buyer has revealed how asking just one question helped her save a massive £2,000 when she moved into her first home.

Becky Chorlton says she was viewing the property with her boyfriend when she spotted the previous owners’ stunning sofas – and instantly fell in love with them.

Knowing the couple were moving in with family, the 29-year-old decided to ask what they planned to do with the furniture once they left.

To her surprise, they said they were going to throw them out because they were eight years old and “gross”.

Sensing an opportunity, Becky, from Cheshire, offered to buy them – but the sellers said she could have them for free instead, saving her a small fortune on what would’ve been a costly purchase.

The sofas, which would’ve cost around £2,000 brand new, were the perfect fit for the living room and gave the couple one less thing to worry about while juggling the endless expenses of buying their first home.

In a TikTok, which garnered 35,000 views, Becky said: “So me and my boyfriend bought our first home about seven months ago.

“When we went to view it, the previous owners had these stunning sofas, which were just perfect for the living room.

“We knew they were moving in with family, so I decided to ask what they were planning to do with the sofas.

“They told me they were just gonna throw them out because they were eight years old and absolutely gross.

“We offered them a bit of money, but they said we could just have them as it would save them a job getting a skip.

“I swear, a sofa this size would cost about £2,000 nowadays, which is obviously money we don’t have when buying our first home, so we were extremely grateful.”

One viewer commented: “That’s amazing,” while others called it a “bargain” and “fantastic job”.

Someone else wrote: “Wow what a transformation.”

“Looks like new,” another person agreed.

Becky, who runs a vintage clothing business, admits the furniture and carpets had seen better days after eight years of use, but a good deep clean soon brought them back to life.

Now her living room looks as good as new – and the sofas should last a few more years yet all thanks to one clever question that saved her thousands.
