For most of us, Christmas is a special time of year celebrated only in December.

But in a town literally called Santa Claus, locals consider the festivities a “lifestyle” rather than just a season.

One lifelong local, Kara Hinshaw, says the small town in Indiana, US, is chock full of Christmas spirit with “magical” year-round decor, festive-themed stores, and a heartwarming local tradition.

“We truly live Christmas 365 days a year,” the real estate broker, 49, told What’s The Jam.

“It isn’t just a season, it’s a lifestyle.

“Some folks even keep their Christmas decorations up inside all year.

“By November, the lights and festivities begin to ramp up, and it feels magical.”

The small town has a population of just 2,609, according to the 2023 census, and has been dubbed “America’s Christmas town”.

Its name came about during a town meeting after it was established in 1854, after it was originally called Santa Fe – a name which had already been taken by another Indiana town.

The name Santa Claus was elected instead, and the town became synonymous with all things Christmas.

Today, the town boasts attractions like Santa’s Candy Castle, the Santa Claus Museum, festive-themed parades and festivals, and toy shops.

The town post office is particularly popular, receiving thousands of letters to Father Christmas from children all over the world each year.

Kara added: “One of the most heartwarming traditions is the volunteer elves answering letters to Santa from children worldwide.”

The local shared a video of her spending a day around town in December, including a trip to the Christmas Store with baubles and ornaments for sale, and Father Christmas himself making an appearance.

Kara said: “In this town you’re going to see Santa Claus all the time.”

She also visits the toy shop – festive-themed, of course – as well as the famous post office.

There is a large statue of Saint Nick, as well a museum dedicated to all things Christmas.

Kara also heads to the Candy Castle – a historic building full of sweets, and local stores which stock Christmassy merchandise.

Even the local pizzeria gets involved, with the popular Grinch pizza.

While the town celebrates year-round, an annual Christmas parade and lights festival are highlights of the calendar – held in December and attracting tourists.

In the town, many residents live in a gated community called Christmas Lake Village, with three lakes: Christmas Lake, Lake Holly, and Lake Noel.

In the summertime, Christmas spirit is still very much present, but Kara says it “seamlessly blends” with summer fun, by way of its popular theme park, Holiday World, which features a water park.

Kara has lived in the small town since she was born, aside from a few years while she studied and worked in her early 20s.

She said: “I’ve lived in Santa Claus my whole life, born and raised.

“My first job was as ‘Holiday Dog’.

“This town has always been home.

“What I love most is the sense of family and community, along with the small-town charm. “While it’s known for its winter theme, Santa Claus is also incredible in the summer with lake living at Christmas Lake, and nearby Lincoln State and National Parks.

“It’s a town that seamlessly blends festive cheer with summer fun.”
