Grey’s Anatomy star Kate Walsh is celebrating her 59th birthday – and fans say she has “aged like fine wine”.
The actress, who won over millions of viewers as the glamorous Dr Addison Montgomery in the hit medical drama, has enjoyed a glittering career spanning decades.
From her early days in Hollywood to landing her own Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Private Practice, Kate has become one of television’s most recognisable faces, as reported by What’s The Jam.

And she’s shown no signs of slowing down, with appearances in hit shows including Emily in Paris and The Umbrella Academy, alongside glamorous red-carpet outings and adventures around the world.
As Kate marks another trip around the sun on 13 October, we take a look back at some of the most memorable moments from her life and career.

Long before she was one of television’s most recognisable doctors, Kate, from San Jose, California, was a kid like everyone else.
Born on 13 October 1967, the future star attended Catalina Magnet High School before moving to Rincon High School, where she completed her education.
She later honed her craft in Chicago’s theatre scene, where she performed with the Piven Theatre Workshop.

It was a far cry from the glamorous Hollywood life that awaited her, but everybody has to start somewhere.
After studying acting at the University of Arizona, she headed to Chicago, where she performed on stage before making the move to New York.
There, the aspiring actress joined the comedy troupe Burn Manhattan and reportedly worked as a waitress while chasing her big break.

Her persistence eventually paid off in 1997, when she landed the recurring role of Nicki Fifer, Drew Carey’s love interest, in the hit sitcom The Drew Carey Show.

With her foot firmly in Hollywood’s door, Kate began swapping sitcom appearances for the silver screen.
In 2003, she starred alongside Diane Lane in the romantic comedy Under the Tuscan Sun, which also featured future Grey’s Anatomy co-star Sandra Oh.
Two years later, she appeared opposite Will Ferrell in Kicking & Screaming.
Kate became a household name in 2005 when she made her jaw-dropping debut as Dr Addison Montgomery in Grey’s Anatomy.
Arriving at Seattle Grace Hospital, she dropped the ultimate bombshell on Meredith Grey: she was married to her new boyfriend, Dr Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey.

Originally intended as a short-lived character, Addison quickly became a fan favourite, turning Kate into one of television’s most recognisable stars.
Kate teamed up with charity Oceana in 2009 to help protect endangered sea turtles.
The actress travelled to the US Virgin Islands, where she swam alongside turtles and witnessed hatchlings making their way towards the ocean.
She has since continued campaigning to protect mammals and marine life.
Kate turned businesswoman in 2010 when she launched her own perfume, cheekily named Boyfriend.

Inspired by missing an ex-partner’s scent after their breakup, the fragrance proved an instant hit, selling out during its debut on shopping channel HSN.
It later landed on Sephora’s shelves before Kate revived the brand in 2018.
Away from the flashing lights, Kate faced a frightening ordeal in 2015 when doctors discovered a benign brain tumour.
After experiencing exhaustion, balance problems and difficulty concentrating, the actress underwent surgery to have it removed.
She kept the diagnosis private until 2017, when she opened up about the experience and urged others to listen to their bodies.

Now recovered, Kate says the experience transformed her outlook, encouraging her to prioritise loved ones over work.
Kate found love in the most unexpected place – Antarctica.
In February 2020, she met Australian farmer Andrew Nixon aboard a National Geographic expedition ship, surrounded by penguins, whales and icebergs.
Andrew’s family farming business in Western Australia raises Merino sheep and grows wheat, barley and canola.
Kate’s Australian holiday to visit Andrew became a permanent move after she arrived in Perth on 14 March 2020, just before COVID border closures.
She has since bought a home in the coastal suburb of Cottesloe, sharing the single-storey property with partner Andrew.

Kate now calls Perth home, although she still maintains an apartment in New York.
After nine years away, Kate made a triumphant return to Grey’s Anatomy in October 2021, reuniting with Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey for a groundbreaking uterine transplant.
And it wasn’t just a fleeting cameo.
Addison appeared in eight episodes across seasons 18 and 19 between 2021 and 2023, including a dramatic storyline involving anti-abortion protesters.
She even returned again in January 2026 for season 22, proving the fan favourite still has staying power.
More recently, Kate looked sensational in a figure-hugging black silk dress as she attended the Metropolitan Opera’s Opening Night Gala in New York.
She captioned the post: “Giving Lady Macbeth the night off… @MetOpera Opening Night Gala!”
Fans were quick to praise the look, with Ava writing: “You aged like fine wine.”
Whats The Jam has approached Kate Walsh’s representatives for comment.
