An adorable baby pygmy hippo has ventured outside for the first time – weeks after making a surprise early arrival.
Little Piper was born to parents Gloria and Otto earlier than expected, just hours after keepers announced her mum was pregnant.
Now the one-month-old is growing in confidence and has already developed a “sassy” attitude, according to her keepers.

After recently taking her first dip in the pool, Piper has now headed outdoors to explore under the watchful eye of mum Gloria.
The youngster is expected to spend increasing amounts of time outside as she gets to know her new surroundings.
But with colder weather approaching, keepers say she may choose to stay cosy indoors instead.
Last month, Piper was given a bath and full medical check-up, with vets confirming she was doing well, as reported by What’s The Jam.
Dr Stephanie Mota, head vet at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said: “Gloria did a great job raising Amara and Haggis, and she’s very comfortable with the keepers and vets knowing we are there to help.

“It was lovely to meet Piper up close and confirm she is doing really well.”
Piper is the third calf born to Gloria and Otto, following Amara in 2021 and Haggis in 2024.
Amara moved to ZSL London Zoo in 2023 as part of the European breeding programme for the endangered species.

Haggis followed in 2025 when she moved to Wingham Wildlife Park.
She had already become an internet sensation after winning fans around the world with her “sassy side-eye” and diva personality.
The cheeky hippo starred in viral videos and even made an appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Now little sister Piper appears to be following in her footsteps and proving she has plenty of personality of her own.
