A British couple watched Mount Etna erupt from a plane just hours after racing up the volcano.

Jon and Jo Meek visited Sicily, Italy, for the European Masters off-road running championship.

But shortly after boarding their easyJet flight home, Jon spotted large plumes of ash bursting out of its crater.

“We had been on the volcano not long before,” he told What’s The Jam.

“Jo was second in her race and fell asleep on the plane home.

“I was sitting in the opposite aisle and could see the plumes of smoke as Etna erupted.

“It was amazing, but raced been 24 hours later, we would have been right in the thick of it.”

“I had a great view of the eruption.

“It was fascinating.

“I was just lucky I was sitting in a window seat and overlooking it as we flew off.

“It was exciting to watch – an amazing sight.

A British couple saw Mount Etna erupt from their plane just hours after racing up the volcano during a championship in Sicily, capturing a dramatic and rare sight.

“Jo was fast asleep, and she slept through the whole thing.”

A number of explosions were recorded on Monday (2 Jun), Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology Etna Observatory said.

Jo added, “Literally the day before, I ran up to the cable car station and back down as part of the race, and we thought absolutely nothing of it.

“I can’t actually believe it because you fly out for one race, and if the volcano had erupted and we couldn’t race, I would have been pretty gutted.

“I have to confess I was fast asleep on the airplane, but Jon had a great view.”
