Shoppers have been left baffled after security tags were put on £1.90 cans of Red Bull in a posh Sainsbury’s.

The red and yellow anti-theft tops were placed on the 250ml drinks.

A customer noticed them on the regular and sugar free versions on Wednesday (Oct 23).

They were in the Sainsbury’s Local in Stratton Street – near the Ritz Hotel – in Mayfair, west London.

He joked: “We’ve failed as a country.”

Fellow shoppers were shocked by the security measure.

Becca said: “Which energy deprived soul is nicking a Red Bull to make this a requirement in shops.”

Jack added: “To those who encourage shoplifting, well done.”

Another said: “Don’t nobody be stealing them wings that Red Bull gives no more.”

A fourth added: “There’s no way these security things cost less than the amount of Red Bulls a shop has stolen.”

Sainsbury’s has been approached for a comment.

It comes after shops have increasingly put security tags on products to thwart shoplifters amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Last week, Morrisons in Fleet, Hampshire sparked anger by putting champagne in a locked fridge, as reported by What’s The Jam.
