A group of savvy shoppers have debated classic Christmas sweet treats against supermarket own-brand versions – and the results might surprise you.
Bargain hunter Glenn Kennedy took to Facebook to share the best deals on offer now autumn is officially upon us.
In a group he created on the social media platform, he shared a picture of McVitie’s Ginger Nuts, which are £1.50 for a 250g pack.

He also posted a photo of Tesco’s own version of the biscuits, which are 65p for 300g.
Shoppers can also pick up 300g of Ms Molly’s Ginger Nuts for a very reasonable 59p.
Captioning the post, he said: “A clear example of main brand over charge compared to stores own and budget range, at Tesco.”
Glenn, who lives in Llandudno, Wales, also shared another post featuring chocolate reindeers, writing: “You do have options this Christmas.”
One image shows the famous Lindt Chocolate Reindeer, available to purchase for £3.50, or £3.00 for Clubcard holders.
Another shows that Tesco Chocolate Hollow Reindeers are on sale for 89p.
But in the comments section, shoppers had a lot to say, as reported by What’s The Jam.
When it came to the biscuits, many people said the cheaper versions were just as good.
Brenda wrote: “The Mollys ones are very good.”
Susan said: “Always buy my gingers from Aldi.”
“Main brands far too expensive – don’t buy anything like this anymore,” Christine added.
“Lidl has their own brand of ginger biscuits for less than 30p,” wrote Colin.
But despite being happy to opt for the cheaper version when it came to ginger nuts, shoppers didn’t appear to want to compromise when it came to chocolate.
Tricia commented: “It’s Christmas, so for me Lindt wins hands down.”
Liz agreed: “Got to be Lindt.”
“They do them every year, and coloured foil at Easter, obviously they don’t taste as nice as Lindt but for kids they are excellent stocking fillers,” said Diana.
Lorraine wrote: “A vast difference. Lindt is a beautiful chocolate however.”
“One is a generic non-brand or label, the other spends a fortune on advertising and then passes on the cost to the consumer,” said Sean.
The debate follows another Christmas treat-related discovery from last week.
Glenn took a trip to Asda and Poundland, and noticed a variety of festive treats already for sale, including Malteasers, Haribo and Terry’s Chocolate Orange.
However, despite its name, the retailer is selling just two out of 21 items for £1.
The rest are sold at higher prices.
Tracey wrote: “Just one question: why is this shop still called Poundland when most of their products are £1.50 upwards. Not as good as it used to be.”
Julie said: “Only 2 things on all those shelves that are a pound.”
“Popped in to Poundland for the first time in ages last week. Won’t be going again, it’s got so expensive. Better deals elsewhere,” commented Sharon.
Alec added: “Was £1.00 now £1.50.
“But are they a pound,” questioned Alison.
“They’ll reduce them down to their usual price of £1 to £1.50 to try to make everyone think they are getting a bargain,” Carol commented.
Jam Press contacted Poundland for comment, and a spokesperson for the chain said: “Bah Humbug – that’s just one small display with some of our best savings versus prices elsewhere.
“There are almost 50 Xmas items at £1 or below in our full Xmas confectionery range plus a market-leading 2 for £2.50 on 15 different kinds of tubes.
“That’s why Santa’s going to be filling his boots this year at Poundland.”
