A savvy Brit has revealed how he managed to get breakfast, snacks and groceries for just 5p – and even ended up making money in the process.

Al Baker shared how a simple morning walk turned into a major win during the cost-of-living crisis.

By stacking deals across multiple everyday apps, he was able to pick up food from Greggs and Sainsbury’s for next to nothing.

The money-saving trick has since caught attention online, after he explained how combining offers can dramatically cut costs.

Al, of Aldershot, Hampshire, used a £5 Sainsbury’s gift card, which he had won through a promotion on his First Direct banking app, to pick up items including eggs and grapes.

The 51-year-old then stopped at Greggs, where he claimed a free coffee through Octopus Energy and a free bacon and sausage baguette via O2 Priority.

In total, he spent just 5p out of pocket.

But the savings didn’t stop there.

By scanning his receipt on the Clear! app, he earned 10p back – meaning he actually made a small profit on the shop.

The deal-stacking approach means he can combine multiple offers in one trip.

“I could go in there, get my free coffee, get a free baguette, and pay a quid for a sausage roll as well if I wanted to,” Al told Whats The Jam.

Referring to his savings, he said: “Over the course of the year, it adds up to huge amounts.

“I’m the type of person that pinches pennies – if I can save money, I will.”

He explained that the key is regularly checking apps that many people already have but rarely use.

“Banking apps, energy apps, phone provider apps – there are freebies and discounts sitting there every day, but lots of people never look,” he said.

Al said he routinely uses O2 Priority, where users can access weekly deals such as discounted Greggs items, as well as his First Direct app, which recently rewarded him with multiple £5 vouchers for Greggs, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s.

He also keeps an eye on Octopus Energy perks, which offer a free hot drink each week.

Beyond food, Al says the apps regularly offer discounts on days out, including Vue cinema tickets and National Trust entry for a fraction of the usual price.

He also uses cashback platforms such as TopCashback and Quidco, as well as the JamDoughnut app, to earn money back on everyday spending.

Al, who also shares cost-of-living tips to his https://www.thepennypincher.co.uk/frugalfeatures blog, believes the strategy has made a real difference during hard times.

“It can be the difference between actually being able to do something and not,” he said.
