A sandwich shop which charges £1 seagull insurance – in case sarnies are pinched by the bird menaces – has raised £3,000 for charity.

The Cheesy Toast Shack is in a constant battle with the beachside flying fiends with customers constantly having their food snatched.

Visitors can add a £1 ‘seagull insurance’ on to their bill to get a free replacement if the bird takes their mea

The insurance has been such a success that the shop is now using it to raise money for charities close to their heart.

Kate Carter-Larg, 35, revealed that after the family run business introduced it they decided to donate ‘every penny’ of the seagull money straight away.

Since September, they have raised a whopping £3,263 which has been donated to a multitude of great causes.

Kate’s proudest achievement was raising £1,020 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, for her mother who she sadly lost two days after Christmas last year.

The shop in St Andrews, Scotland, donates the money to a different charity each month.

So far Kate and her husband Chris Larg have raised money for PSC Support, Breast Cancer Now, Marie Curie, a local MS charity, a St Andrews food bank and a Christmas toy appeal.

“We’re proud that as a small, family run business we can make decisions like this, without having to run it past any other people,” Kate told What’s The Jam.

“We decided to donate every penny of the seagull insurance taken, pretty much straight away.

“I’m most proud of raising £1,020 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, for my mum.

“That was the total for the October seagull insurance, when I was still losing my mum to Alzheimer’s.

“Sadly, we finally lost her two days after Christmas just gone.

“But I know she’d have been proud of everyone for raising that amount, the biggest amount from all the months.

“The fact the idea went viral last summer, boosted our popularity massively.

“We felt it would be fitting, and a nice thing to do off the back of it.

“The insurance absolutely boosted the amount of footfall and people coming to our shop.

“We have a plaque outside the shop saying “home of the famous £1 seagull insurance” and people are constantly having their picture taken by it.

“We’ve definitely seen an increase in attacks, as they’re clever creatures and know where to get food easily.

“I wouldn’t wish a seagull attack on anyone, I’ve seen people with scratched faces and rolled ankles off the back of attacks.”
