Baffled onlookers watched on as the fella waded into the waist high water.
He battled past seaweed-strewn mooring ropes for 30 metres to the quayside wall.

One local told him to put his hand into the water at the base of the wall.
At first he unsuccessfully grabbed his own foot.
But he then said: “I see it.”
He pulled out the white device and held it aloft to cheers and whoops in St Ives, Cornwall.
An onlooker joked: “He’s got to buy a bag of rice now.”

The man then waded back to shore with the mobile in his hand.
Local Vanessa Fielder – who owns a jewellery shop nearby – said: “A young lad tried to jump over a bench but forgot his phone was in his pocket.
“It slid out, skidded along the floor and plopped into the sea.

“Without hesitation, he jumped in after it and retrieved it.”
Banni David quipped: “The views are stunning in St.Ives.”
Ali Potter suggested: “You should have asked him if he needed help.
“With a towel or getting his wet clothes off.”
Andy Vaughton-Morris added: “Had his underwear on inside out too, not that I was looking much.”
And Sandra Pilgrim added: “Lucky you woohoo.”
While Amanda Allen simply said: “Great view.”
Sadly the mystery man’s phone didn’t survive.
Vanessa told What’s The Jam: “It was destroyed.
“He came into my shop looking for jewellery and I recognised him and showed him the video and he laughed and said his phone was beyond repair.”
