Wetherspoons, renowned for having its toilets up huge flights of stairs, has been crowned top of the bogs.

The budget boozer chain was hailed as having the best toilets in pubs and bars across the country.

It was recognised at the Loo of the Year Awards 2003.

In total, it won a staggering 807 gongs across its over 900 pubs and hotels in the UK.

Spoons took the title of the best provider of toilets for pubs and hotels in England, Scotland and Wales.

The toilets were judged on décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand-washing and drying equipment and overall management.

Wetherspoons pubs and hotels received 11 diamond awards, 120 platinum plus awards, 554 platinum awards and 122 gold awards.

Among the prize winners were The Rose Salterne, in Bideford, Devon, and the Yr Hen Dderwen, in Carmarthen, Wales.

The Stargazer, in Greenwich, southeast London, and The Silver Penny, in Dublin, Ireland, also triumphed.

The Rose Salterne ladies have modern, circular sinks and an array of mirrors and The Stargazer has jazzy stars on the walls.

Martin Geoghegan, operations director, said: “Staff at our pubs ensure, at all times, that the toilets are in excellent condition.

“And it is great that this has been recognised by inspectors.

“Offering customers clean and well-maintained toilets is of utmost importance to us.”

The Loo of the Year’s managing director, Becky Wall, said: “The Loo of the Year’s gold grade is our fit-for-purpose benchmark.

“And it is always encouraging to see how the managers of Wetherspoon present their toilets and receive the grades awarded to them seriously.

“This is illustrated by the majority of Wetherspoons pubs and hotels having received platinum, platinum plus and, some, the top diamond gradings.”
