A 160-year-old beer bottle has been found by litter pickers at a beauty spot.

It had the marking ‘Imperial, Pick & Company’ on it.

A Consort Cola can from the 1970s and a Pepsi one from the 1980s were also among the haul of discarded items.

The volunteers say it shows how long scourges of litter can last.

They were found near the River Witham in Grantham, Lincolnshire, by a team from Grantham RiverCare.

They were responding to recent floods which had hit the town.

The beer bottle markings relate to a shop based in the Westgate area, Grantham, in the 1800s.

Grantham RiverCare spokesman, David Martin, said it was the oldest item they’d ever found.

“It is certainly the oldest,” he told What’s The Jam.

“We estimate it’s 160 years old as William Pick who owned the shop was born in Caythorpe, Lincs, in 1813.

“It probably had beer in it.

“The shop was a wine and spirits merchant.

“In total, 31 bags of discarded litter were collected, including many pieces of old litter lurking somewhere along the river.

“A lot of this can be roughly dated by recognising the brand designs and how they have changed over the years.”

Other litter found were KFC wrappers and a plastic bag for Key Markets, both believed to be around 40 years old.

Mr Martin added: “We will keep them for our talks to educate that litter very much doesn’t disappear and is not a new problem.”
