An artist is selling a supersized Sainsbury’s “bag for life” – for a jaw-dropping £740,000.
Vinay Hathi created the giant supermarket-themed “Birkin” as a quirky art piece – but is now looking to cash in.
The 50-year-old says he wants to sell the bizarre creation to fund even more eye-catching projects.

His oversized bag is inspired by the ultra-luxury Hermès Birkin – which can fetch hundreds of thousands of pounds.
“I would sell it, so I can make more bags,” Vinay, from Morden, Surrey, told What’s The Jam.

“For anyone who is not familiar with what a Hermès Birkins is or for how much they sell for, new ones start at £10,000 and can go over £2million on the second hand market.
“I was inspired by my partner showing me these expensive handbags that cost a small fortune.
“So I decided I would make her one as a joke out of some leftover carpet, big enough to put her in and carry her about.”

The giant bag was originally created for an exhibition and later displayed at Espacio Gallery as part of Degrees of Freedom – The Playful Turn.

It’s the latest in Vinay’s series of oversized creations, which have also featured brands like Sports Direct and Primark.
But transporting the massive bag hasn’t been easy.

He added: “To get it to the gallery we had to travel via the Central Line from Ilford to Bethnal Green, we had loads of strange looks on the tube and every now and then someone asking what the bag was all about.
“As introverts we were both out of our comfort zone, I remember panic sweating the whole way, but the experience has been positive.
“People like to pick it up and pose with it for photos.”
The unusual piece was most recently on display at Free The Gallery in Crystal Palace, London, with the exhibition closing on 12 April.
