If you want to be more environmentally friendly in death, you can now get buried in a biodegradable mushroom coffin.
It’s exactly what it sounds like – a giant, coffin-shaped mushroom that aids the decomposition process.
Described as the world’s “first living coffin”, it allows bodies to “become part of nature’s majestic loop of life and enrich the earth” within just 45 days of burial.
Amazingly, the coffin itself just takes seven days to grow at a facility in Delft, the Netherlands.

Called the ‘Loop Living Cocoon’, the coffin is made from a combination of local mushroom species and upcycled hemp fibres.
Once decomposed, it allows you to feed the earth and increase biodiversity in the process, making it a perfect option for any eco-conscious person after death.
It is described as being certified for traditional burials, natural burials and cremations.
The description reads: “The Cocoon can be carried using the six integrated jute handles, or alternatively, shouldered for ease of carrying.

“During the burial, it can be lowered with a mechanical lift system, as well as with ropes.
“Due to its hydrophobic properties, the Cocoon is perfectly suitable for use during a wake on a mobile mortuary refrigerator or for funerals in the rain.
“The Cocoon can be stored indefinitely when it is placed in a dry and ventilated space, just like conventional coffins.”

As we all know, funerals are a personal affair and the mushroom coffin is also built with this in mind.
Potential users – or their families – can therefore also opt for personalisation extras including a biodegradable painting kit.
There’s also the option of a biodegradable linen shroud, and the deceased can either be placed on a bed of moss or a sustainable linen lining.
The unique product costs £961.81 (€1,125) – including VAT but excluding shipping costs.
