A massive portrait of Sir David Attenborough made from 11,000 pumpkins and squashes has landed a Guinness World Record.

The incredible mosaic depicts the national treasure alongside a colourful frog to celebrate his 100th birthday.

A team of 18 people spent five hours painstakingly placing thousands of pumpkins and squashes to create the giant artwork.

Stunning aerial footage shows the finished portrait covering a huge mound, with Sir David’s face only becoming clear when viewed from above, as reported by Whats The Jam.

The creation measures a whopping 218.2 square metres – or 2,349 sq ft – and has officially been recognised as the world’s largest squash mosaic image.

It was created at Sunnyfields Farm in Totton, Hampshire, after members of the public overwhelmingly voted for the legendary broadcaster to feature on this year’s display.

Farm director Thomas Nelson said: “The reason why the public was so overwhelmingly asking for David is because of how much he means to so many families across the UK and the world, how much he has been part of being in our living rooms, and the causes he has championed for his entire life.

“100 years of being part of all of our lives is something that needs to be championed and celebrated, and we’re very pleased and proud to be a part of it.”

The enormous portrait was designed by the farm’s in-house artist Andrew Bega, who also created its Ozzy Osbourne display last year.

But turning his design into a giant pumpkin portrait was no easy task.

The team used approximately 11,000 pumpkins and squashes – all in their natural colours – and three JCB telehandlers to complete the mammoth job.

Work started at 8.30am and was finished by 1.30pm, including breaks for food and water.

The team started at the bottom of the mound and worked their way upwards, throwing the pumpkins between each other before carefully placing them in position.

Thomas said Sir David’s facial features proved particularly challenging to recreate.

He said: “The face elements in particular are always the hard bits – the mouth and the eyes especially.”

The farm even had to make its huge mound bigger in preparation for this year’s attempt.

Its owners extended the base by around 1.5 metres using approximately 20 tonnes of extra soil.

Thomas said: “We really wanted to beat last year’s size.

“When we originally built the pyramid, we actually didn’t build it symmetrically, so if you look at all the previous years, the right-hand side is at a steeper gradient.

“Therefore, what we have done is increase the right-hand side base by about 1.5m.

“It took about 20 tonnes of extra soil to get this done.”

The work paid off, with Guinness World Records senior adjudicator Pravin Patel officially confirming the record.

It beat the farm’s previous 212-square-metre record, set with a portrait of the late Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne in 2025.

Sunnyfields first entered the record books in 2023 with a 193.35-square-metre display inspired by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The latest creation therefore marks the third time the family-run farm has claimed the record.

This year’s achievement came despite difficult growing conditions following months of hot and dry weather.

Thomas said: “It has been very tough.

“The heat and lack of rain have been unprecedented.

“The best conditions for pumpkin are lots of sun and lots of water.”

He said pumpkins and squashes develop deep tap roots which help them search for water, but many of this year’s crop were still smaller than usual.

One exception was a white variety known as Polar Bear, which produced particularly large pumpkins.

But they became so big they could not be incorporated into the mosaic.

Despite now breaking the record three times, the family has not ruled out attempting an even bigger display.

Thomas added: “There is always scope to go bigger and better.

“We can’t say we have given too much thought to it, though it’s best not to put limits on what you can achieve.”
