The F1 car that David Coulthard raced to his last ever victory is set to sell for £1.2m.

The Brit track ace drove the 211mph McLaren MP4-17A during the 2002/03 season.

During his career, the driver, now 54, took the chequered flag 13 times in total.

The F1 car for sale helped him achieve the last of those in the Australian Grand Prix in March 2003.

He achieved a further five podium finishes in it.

It was also driven by team-mate and ex-F1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen and was used in 12 races in total.

The racing car is fitted with a 3.0-litre Mercedes-Benz FO110-series V-10 engine.

However, any potential buyer will need to rebuild the engine if they want to use it.

The McLaren is being sold by RM Sotheby’s, as reported on Whats The Jam.

A spokesperson said: “As double Formula 1 World Champion Mika Häkkinen opted to take a sabbatical for 2002, McLaren signed his rapid Finnish heir apparent Kimi Räikkönen from Sauber.

“Alongside David Coulthard, it made for a refreshed driver line-up.

“Coulthard had his first turn behind the wheel of this chassis in the United States Grand Prix.

“The Scot converted third on the grid before the campaign ended with a throttle-induced retirement in Japan.

“This car was upgraded for the curtain-raising Australian Grand Prix.

“Coulthard ran wide through the opening corner in qualifying, resigned to start 11th.

“But pre-race rain threw a curveball. As conditions improved, Coulthard made a lap-two switch for dry tyres.

“With Räikkönen penalised for pit lane speeding, Michael Schumacher clonking a kerb, and Williams talisman Juan Pablo Montoya spinning late on, Coulthard swept past to win by almost nine seconds aboard MP4-17A-06.

“It would be his 13th and final F1 victory.”
It goes under the hammer in Paris on 28 January with a guide price of up to £1.2m.

But there is no reserve.
