A couple who got engaged with the help of some penguins at a zoo have finally tied the knot.

Louise Singer, 40, enlisted the birds to surprise her then girlfriend Naomi.

The 31-year-old has loved penguins since watching Pingu when she was a child.

Louise arranged for the pair to have a feeding session and told staff about her plans to propose.

The workers told the couple to hunt for a small egg toy that had been hidden in the enclosure.

When Naomi found it, she opened it to find a note telling her to turn around where Louise was waiting on one knee.

The proposal took place at Drusillas Park, near Alfriston, East Sussex, in February last year.

They wed on 15 August at a farm in Suffolk in front of 116 guests and have now just returned from honeymoon,

Occupational therapist Louise and electrician Naomi made sure to incorporate the birds into their special day by naming each table after a breed of penguin.

“The day was lovely. It went perfectly. It was like a fairytale, it was amazing,” Louise, of Bromley, Kent, told What’s the Jam.

“Of course we incorporated penguins. Everyone’s card at the table had a penguin on it.”

Naomi, from Mill Hill, north west London, added: “The day went swimmingly.

“The table numbers were different breeds of penguins like emperor and royal.

“We did a speech together and we started off with ‘hello penguins’ which went down well.

“I used to love Pingu and when we went to the zoo I always wanted to spend the most time with the penguins.”

They spent the four days leading up to the big day apart and sent each other a sweet gift each morning.

Louise gifted Naomi two cuddly toy penguins.

Naomi says she has a penguin shrine in her home where she keeps them.

Naomi said: “We didn’t see or speak to each other for four days before the wedding but we bought each other gifts.

“Louise bought me two cuddly penguins. I have a shrine of penguins.”

The pair met on Bumble in 2021 and Naomi shared her love of penguins on their first date.

Louise then bought her a hamper full of penguin themed gifts.

Naomi added: “On our first date, we were sharing facts about each other and I said I love penguins.

“Louise then bought me a penguin hamper but she was worried it was too forward.

“She didn’t know if I loved penguins that much but I do. I’ve got mugs, jumpers, teddies and earrings.”
