A wandering wallaby which shocked a driver when it was spotted bounding down a road has now skipped into a back garden.

Last week, the marsupial amazed Scott Weller as it leapt along the road in front of him on his way to work.

Scott initially thought the mystery animal was a dog, until he noticed it was hopping.

Realising a wallaby was on the loose, Scott became worried it could be hit by one of the cars behind him and decided to follow it.

The runaway marsupial eventually made its way onto the pavement before coming to a stop.

The wallaby then disappeared down a side road in Liskeard, Cornwall.

Now it has turned up in the garden of broadband firm Wildanet, as reported by What’s The Jam.

A spokesperson said: “We were lucky enough to be visited by Liskeard’s local wallaby.

“It’s the first time it’s been spotted here.”

Speaking after his encounter last week, Scott said: “It was a bit sad that he was out there on his own, as there can’t have been much for it to eat because of the heatwave we’ve been having.

“I just thought, ‘Poor thing, he’s lost.’”

The Cornish pasty firm boss reported the bizarre sighting to police, although the call handler initially had some trouble understanding exactly what he had spotted.

Scott said: “I told her, ‘there’s a wallaby hopping up the street,’ and she replied, ‘The Australian animal, like a small kangaroo? Right, OK.’”

The wallaby has reportedly also been spotted elsewhere in Liskeard.

But by the time police arrived, the mystery marsupial had vanished.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a wallaby seen on Dean Street, Liskeard, shortly before 6am today, August 24.

“Officers carried out an area search but did not locate the animal.”

Wild populations of red-necked wallabies exist in parts of the UK, with occasional sightings elsewhere.

The animals are thought to originate from historical escapes and intentional releases from private zoos and collections.
