A rooster called Hovis is cock-a-hoop after being saved from a water-logged field where he was living under an overturned bread trolley.

The cockerel was in poor health after living alone in the makeshift coop for three months

Rescuers found the trolley had just a piece of tarpaulin placed on top for shelter.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Adam Tasker found him in the field next to the A21 near Tonbridge, Kent and named him Hovis after the bread brand.

He said: “He was living in this ram-shackle shelter in a waterlogged field with no company and little food.

“We were told his owner had left him behind and he was in ill health, so I went to the scene and took him for urgent veterinary treatment.

“I called him Hovis because of where he was found in the bread trolley.

“He had a few sores and abrasions on his under side, was underweight and had damaged tail feathers from pacing back and forth in the small cage.

“He was taken into emergency boarding with the RSPCA where he became a fond favourite with staff.”

Hovis was nursed back to full health and this month was rehomed to a small farm where he is now living in a free range field with hens and ducks for company as reported on What’s The Jam.

Adam said: “I am so pleased Hovis has found the home he deserves.

“He was in such a sad state when I found him and had this incident not been reported to us I do not think he would have survived much longer.
