An adorable pair of the world’s smallest species of fox have moved into a zoo.

Fennec foxes have giant ears that stick out which dispel heat and listen out for prey.

The tiny foxes typically weigh just 2lbs (900g).

They are native to North Africa.

But the duo have just arrived at Exmoor Zoo, in Barnstable, Devon.

This cute species of fox live in underground burrows in the desert, also to keep cool.

They’re so small, eagles prey on them.

This means they’re nocturnal and go out at night to avoid being hunted.

After arriving at the zoo, the foxes made their new home in a built nest box in a heated indoor house at the zoo.

It is part of a European fennec fox breeding programme.

The tiny pair of foxes are yet to be named, as reported by What’s The Jam.

A spokesperson for Exmoor Zoo said: “The Fennec Fox prefers night time to hunt as to avoid bigger predators like eagle-owls and jackals, they have a few unusual adaptations, but can often be found at dawn and dusk too.

“Special adaptations to live in the wild enable them to live and hunt in the northern parts of Africa like Morocco, the Sahara desert and Mauritania.

”They have Large ears to help dispel heat as they are desert dwelling. Much like the Sand Cat, they have extra fur around the pads of their feet to avoid the heat from the sand.

”The ears help to hear underground prey.

“Their coats, kidneys and ears are also special, enabling them to survive in high temperatures and extremely little water.

They also live in underground burrows in the wild (this also helps to keep them cool during the day).

”Some burrows have been recorded with 15 entrances/exits.

”Can you imagine that many doors to your house?

“We’re all pretty excited about the Fennec Foxes arrival, maybe we’ll see you over the Bank Holiday weekend to be some of the first to see them?”
