A lone seal was spotted taking a dip in the River Thames by shocked onlookers.

George Shelley and his band mates came across what they originally thought was a mysterious creature in the water.

On further inspection the group named ‘Her Name Was’ realised it was in fact a seal.
The Thames is home to both grey and harbour seals.

George spotted the lone animal swimming on the west side of Tower Bridge, Southwark, south London.

Members of the public who manage to get a glimpse of these finned commuters are encouraged to report their sightings.

The Zoological Society of London has encouraged this behaviour for the past 20 years.

Keeping an eye on these seals also helps the effort to conserve these predators.

Despite wanting sightings to be reported, the ZSL have also warned members of the public to never approach the animals.

George the singer spotted the seal whilst on the way to practice last Tuesday (10 Jun).
Members of the public were left shocked by the sighting.

Jim Edwards said: “Nessy on a city break.”

Stevie added: “It’s a seal.”

One said: “Since it’s the Thames, it’s probably just a very large turd.”

Another said: “It’s a seal, they travel to warmer waters in the summer.”

One added: “Poor thing I bet that water is toxic.”

A spokesperson for the Zoological Society of London stated: “The Greater Thames Estuary is home to harbour porpoises, harbour seals, grey seals and sometimes whales and dolphins too.”
