An elderly lurcher who was found wandering alone through a former mining village is set to enjoy a cosy Christmas in her forever home.

Edna, believed to be around 12 years old, was discovered roaming the streets by a concerned motorist.

She is thought to have been abandoned as she was too frail to run away and had no collar or microchip.

Edna was painfully thin, had sore eyes, matted fur, decaying teeth and claws that had grown long from neglect.

After treatment, her condition has improved, as reported by What’s the Jam.

While in RSPCA care, Edna was spayed, had all her teeth removed and underwent surgery to remove a mammary mass before she was finally ready to be adopted.

Edna has captured the hearts of first-time dog owners Lisa and James who took her home in time for Christmas.

The dog Edna was picked up in Cornforth, near Durham, in June.

Lisa said: “Edna is our first dog and she’s fitted into our lives perfectly.

“Despite her age she has her crazy moments running around, and she loves to play, explore and do new things.

“She’s so calm and relaxed and happy meeting different people. She likes a short walk every day – as long as it’s not raining, because she hates the rain – and then she sleeps for hours on end.

“She definitely knows what a sofa is.

“We know we won’t have Edna for years and years, but we’ll make sure the time she has with us is happy.

“Anyone thinking about adopting should really consider an older dog – they still have so much love to give.”

An RSPCA spokesperson added: “Edna was painfully thin when she came to us.

“Her teeth were in poor condition, her fur was matted in places and there was discharge coming from her eyes.

“We don’t believe she would have been mobile enough to run away from an owner, which is why we suspect she may sadly have been abandoned.

“Despite her advancing years, she clearly had a real zest for life, and we’re so happy she’ll be able to enjoy her twilight years in a safe and loving home.”
