A woman who struggled to find the right career has revealed her path to becoming a registrar for reality television shows.

Cynthia Green had no idea what was in store when applying for the initial part-time position.

A single mum, with two young children, she was “desperate” for a small role that would give her family stability.

What started as a local gig, though, quickly became the biggest opportunity of her life.

And now, she’s married over 20,000 people, including Nicole and Benaiah from Love is Blind and numerous couples on Married at First Sight UK.

“I’ve always been a romantic and there’s nothing I love more than love,” the 60-year-old, from London, told What’s The Jam.

“Marriage is such a sacred thing to me.

“I don’t like the idea of treating it too casually.

“So when I got asked directly by Channel 4 to take part in Married at First Sight, I felt quite unsure at first.

“But as I thought about it more, I realised it wasn’t that crazy.

“Finding your person in the modern age is so difficult.

“So who was I to judge?”

Cynthia has one “unbreakable” rule when it comes to doing weddings on reality shows; that everyone must take it seriously.

During her five-year stint in Married at First Sight, which she started in 2014, the 60-year-old was responsible for not only marrying the couples – but matching them, too.

She said: “We truly did our best to match couples based on their values, beliefs and personalities.

“Of course, it didn’t always work out.

“And there were some very fierce debates in the expert’s room.

“For the first season, I was only responsible for the notices of marriage at the registry office.

“By season two, I was performing the ceremonies and helping match the couples.

“It could be very tense watching the bride’s family eyeballing the groom as he came up the aisle.

“And one lad got cold feet before the wedding when he came to see me to give notice of marriage and ended up cancelling everything.

“I truly admired his strength for admitting that he couldn’t do it.

“As it’s one of the biggest decisions he would ever make – and it’s not to be taken lightly.”

Cynthia applied for the aforementioned part-time role as a registrar in 1997 after seeing a newspaper advert.

She always tried to make each wedding special, including matching her outfit colours to that of the bridesmaids.

Then, in 2010, a friend of hers saw an email for a show called Wedding House, which focused on themed ceremonies.

She applied – and got the gig.

And this is when her career really took off.

Cynthia said: “I thought it was a joke when I was picked for the job.

“I had to have my hair and makeup done daily to get myself ready for the cameras.

“I did an Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding and 101 Dalmatians.

“I was invited on television shows for interviews and I couldn’t believe it when I saw my face on the big screen.

“Even people started recognising me on the way to work.

“It was surreal.”

After her stint on Married at First Sight UK, she was often requested by couples across the country to perform their ceremonies.

And not long after, in 2023, Netflix’s Love is Blind got in touch.

Since then, she’s also married The Crown’s Claire Foy and performed David Beckham’s Dad, Ted’s, second wedding.

Not only does she help people tie the knot, Cynthia has also registered the birth of thousands of babies, including Jude Law’s son and Jodie Whittaker’s baby.

Although her career has flourished, her personal love life only picked up recently.

After spending nearly five years single, she met Milo, who is 14 years younger than her, through a friend.

Now, they’re engaged and plan on tying the knot in Japan this year.

She added: “I wasn’t sure if this was the right job for me.

“But as soon as I saw how excited the brides and grooms were, I knew instantly I had found my calling.

“It feels amazing to be such a big part of someone’s important moment.

“I did wonder when it would be my turn to find love.

“But now, I’ve met Milo, and I feel like I’ve finally met my soulmate; my forever person.

“Of course, shows like Married at First Sight and Love is Blind don’t have a 100% success rate.

“Only 10 couples from over eight seasons are still together from the Netflix show; which I think is still a massive win.

“Life in the spotlight has been fantastic.

“I’m so glad I’ve been able to make people’s love for one another special.

“But now, it’s my turn.”
