Ocean lovers, assemble – you can now sleep in a harbour crane, surrounded by panoramic views of the sea.

Known as ‘Havenkraan van Harlingen,’ the crane is located in Harlingen, The Netherlands, right on the coast of the North Sea.

Built in 1967, this piece of heavy machinery was used until 1996 for unloading timber from Russia and Scandinavia.

After years of service, it was left derelict, until it was bought in 2001 by the current owner who took two years to transform it to its former glory.

For those years, a sizeable team of history fanatics devoted themselves to renovating the Harbour Crane.

Now, the lovingly restored crane, which features on What’s The Jam, is available to stay in and admire Harlingen from such a high point.

Located 17 metres above the quay, the single room can host two people and includes a fresh breakfast delivered every morning, with an optional add-on of champagne.

Entering the tall crane, the old ladders were replaced by two lifts which take you to your room and the terrace.

The former engine room is now a renovated space, complete with a double bed, Charles Eames chairs and a double rain shower.

The room has also been left with the original red and blue steel walls.

The front of the room is where you can find the impressive floor-to-ceiling glass windows and stick, where guests can rotate the crane 360° during their stay and choose the view themselves.

There is also a terrace on the roof surrounded by a safety railing, where guests are invited to enjoy their meals and take in the surroundings.

Not only is the stay right next to the beautiful harbour, but it is also only a two-hour train journey to Amsterdam.

Nearby there are also tourist spots, restaurants and shopping centres.

The cost of the stay starts at €349, (£298.62) per night.
