A doctor who graduated from Harvard university has gone viral after revealing that he avoids plastic water bottles – and why you should too.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, shares his experience and knowledge with his 349,000 followers on TikTok (@doctorsethimd ).

He previously revealed the shocking theory behind urgent shopping toilet trips, linked to a phenomenon known as Mariko Aoki, as reported by What’s The Jam.

In a recent clip posted on TikTok, which has racked up 402,000 views and over 4,000 likes, the 42-year-old discloses the reasons he “avoids” plastic water bottles.

He begins with a firm warning: “Stop using plastic water bottles.”

Dr Sethi explains that a recent study, published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that one litre of water from a plastic water bottle can leach an estimated 240,000 nano plastic particles.

He continues: “[These particles] have the potential to penetrate human cells and gain entry into the bloodstream and major organs.

“There are concerns that these plastic particles can be endocrine disruptors.”

This means that complications such as hormone imbalance and other health issues, especially while out in the heat, can occur.

Dr Sethi added: “The heat will cause even more release of microplastics into your water bottle.”

He advises people to use other materials, such as stainless steel instead.

While it’s difficult to avoid using plastic water bottles all the time, it’s important to switch to a reusable, safer alternative where you can.

Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions, with many people left asking more questions. “You say don’t drink from a plastic bottle others say don’t drink from tap?

Where are we supposed to drink from?” one user commented.

Soma added: “Even tap water pipes delivered by plastic.”

“Damn. Anything we can have?” said someone else.

Anton said: “Glass and metal is the best alternative.”

“Now whole world is plastic its difficult,” added another user.

Dr Sethi, from California, US, added: “Being a health professional, I stress the dangers of plastic water bottles.

“opt for stainless steel bottles when possible, especially in warm environments to minimise exposure to microplastics.”
