Rodney’s journey of losing nearly half his body weight has transformed his life, enabling him to live independently, fulfill his dream of becoming a nurse, and even practice naked yoga.
His struggle with weight has been a lifelong battle. For years, he endured unwanted stares and cruel comments, with one particularly painful memory of people debating if he was a “man with boobs or a woman with a beard.”
When Rodney’s weight reached 36 stone, he decided he had to make a change. Living in his father’s basement, his confidence was at an all-time low.

Rodney not only wanted to improve his health but also dreamed of a career switch from a monotonous corporate sales job to the healthcare sector.
“No one expects much from an obese man, so I figured I had nothing to lose,” Rodney, from Iowa, reflected. “I was eating too much and moving too little. Food was more than nutrition for me; it was comfort, healing, therapy, and, in many ways, an addiction.
The comments about my body were hard to bear. Once, at a hot spring, I overheard people debating if I was a woman with a beard or a man with man boobs and no visible penis. It was the most humiliating thing I’ve ever experienced.
That moment gave me a lot of motivation, even though it took years to start losing weight. I wanted to quit my sales job and become an EMT and eventually a nurse. I knew I had to choose between my dream or being grossly overweight.
The decision boiled down to a simple choice made thousands of times: Did I want to be an EMT or continue sitting around eating potato chips?”

Rodney had tried various weight loss methods over the years, including WeightWatchers, calorie counting, gym memberships, and therapy, but the results were inconsistent.
His turning point came when he bought a stationary bike for $25 at a garage sale and signed up for naked yoga.
“I used the bike so much, I literally rode the pedals off it,” Rodney said. “Then I started doing yoga at around 365 pounds. I knew I couldn’t keep up with a group class at that size, so I found a private instructor. I always thought yoga would be better done naked for practical reasons and to combat body image issues.

My instructor didn’t offer this type of class, so I looked online and found True Naked Yoga, which offers videos for self-practice. I wanted to feel secure in my own skin, and this felt like a good way to confront my insecurities.
The first session was five minutes of sheer terror, but I quickly discovered it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. In fact, I loved it!”
Before his weight loss, Rodney’s diet consisted of comfort foods like pasta, pizza, bread, and frequent seconds or thirds.
“I wasn’t a big fan of sweets, but carbs were my downfall—pizza, pasta, and fried foods, all in excess. I used drive-thrus a lot, always ordering extra-large meals or extras. Between meals, I’d snack constantly on chips with dips.”
Rodney’s current meal plan is vastly different. He intermittently fasts until lunch, then eats lean proteins like turkey slices or tuna. Dinner usually consists of steak, chicken, or seafood with vegetables, avoiding processed foods.
By 2024, Rodney had achieved his dream of changing careers and was working as a nurse. Weighing around 20 stone, he had shed 16 stone since starting his fitness journey in 2010 and was on track to lose another 100 pounds.
“Everything is easier now—walking, showering, sitting in a theatre or restaurant, and being intimate. Imagine carrying around three to five gallons of water tied around your body and then taking them off. That’s the freedom I feel. My body works better, I enjoy everything more, and the sense of accomplishment is huge, even though I’m far from done.
My weight loss was just the start—naked yoga has given me a greater appreciation for my body. Self-confidence is a huge part of the lasting effects. I still have 100 pounds to go and can’t wait to feel what it’s like with that off too.”
True Naked Yoga was founded by friends Tom Severini and Gabriel Bienczycki in 2018, offering online instructional naked yoga videos for all abilities.
Speaking about Rodney’s journey, Tom said, “When Gabe and I started True Naked Yoga, our mission was to help people embrace healthier lifestyles through naked yoga. As an online-only platform, we don’t always see the direct impact firsthand. Rodney’s story has been incredibly motivating and rewarding.
He was one of the first members to reach out, sharing how transformative our videos and approach were for his wellness journey.
I remember calling Gabe excitedly to discuss Rodney’s feedback. His progress has been a driving inspiration for us to continue pushing forward, hoping to facilitate similar positive changes for more people through naked yoga.”
Rodney’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of determination and self-acceptance, illustrating how significant lifestyle changes can lead to incredible personal transformations.
