An emotional letter written by Sir Paul McCartney about John Lennon is set to sell for upwards of £74,000.

It is being hailed as one of the most personal Beatles artefacts ever discovered.

Penned on the star’s graphic letterhead “Paul McCartney US” in about 2005, the letter reflects Paul’s deep admiration and enduring bond with his bandmate.

Simply signed “love, Paul”, the letter is being offered by RR Auction as part of its Marvels of Modern Music sale.

The letter was addressed to Q Magazine, an influential British music publication, as reported by What’s The Jam.

“It’s impossible to sum up in a short letter how & why I love John, but here are a few thoughts,” Paul wrote.

“I love him because…. he was a mate through our teenage years in Liverpool, he was the guy I sat across from as we worked out how to write songs he was the man I admired as we evolved through the madness of fame, fortune, and ‘fabness,’ and he was, and still is, the heroic figure whose wit and wisdom, with a little help from his friends, shaped the thoughts and lives of millions of people.

“And so much more.”

A poignant nod to one of the Beatles’ most iconic tracks was made as Paul wrote “with a little help from his friends”.

The single-page letter, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, remains in fine condition, with only one small crease in the lower left corner.

It comes with a letter of provenance from James Hyman, founder of HYMAG.

James discovered the paper among a vast archive acquired from Bauer Media, the former publishers of Q Magazine, during their 2017 London office relocation.

Bobby Livingston, Executive Vice President at RR Auction, said the letter is “as personal as it gets” in terms of the band’s memorabilia.

He said, “In terms of Beatles memorabilia, this is as personal as it gets.

“A signed letter in Paul’s own hand, reflecting on John’s impact and their friendship.

“It’s a singular piece of pop culture history.”

Paul and John’s relationship is legendary, and their partnership produced some of the most iconic songs in history.

Although their later years were marked by tension and distance, their letter marks how special they were to one another.

The letter has already been bid on 13 times.

It is currently listed at £23,673 and the auction ends on 20 June.
