A shelter dog who waited more than two years for a forever home has finally been adopted.
Cali, a five-year-old pit bull mix, spent 800 days in the centre, which tried in vain to find her a caring new owner.
She arrived at her shelter in October 2023 after being rescued along with her litter of 11 puppies.

While her babies were quickly re-homed, Cali was repeatedly overlooked.
Despite being described by staff at Wags and Walks Rescue in Los Angeles, California, as loving and sweet-natured, she received very little adoption interest.
The long stay was partly blamed on her breed and the length of time she had already spent in rescue, as reported by What’s The Jam.
But after more than 26 months waiting, everything changed.
She was adopted last month and finally left the shelter for good.

Cali’s new owner had lost her previous pit bull a few months prior and instantly fell in love.
Emotional footage shared on the rescue centre’s Instagram on December 20 shows Cali kissing staff goodbye before strutting out to start her new life.
Cali was even surprised with a cake reading: “800 days later… you’re home.”

Now settled into her new home, Cali is said to be thriving.

The heartwarming video of her exit has been liked more than 26,000 times, and received 257,000 views.
“To the person who gave her a home: thank you,” one animal lover said.

“Best thing I have seen today!! Have the best life sweet girl,” another said.
A third added: “You’re finale home sweetheart (sic).”

“Congratulations Cali! You deserve all the happiness and the best life pretty girl,” a fourth said.
“I’m not crying, you’re crying,” said a fifth.
