In the video, a woman can be seen first washing a pumpkin with a bleach and water solution – one tablespoon of bleach per pint of water – to help prevent mould from forming.
The bleach will evaporate once it dries.
Then, instead of cutting the pumpkin lid from the top, she carves hers from the bottom so it can be placed over a tealight or candle, instead of using a lid.
The post claims this will help prevent the sides from caving in later, and will also make it easier to move the pumpkin to different locations.
Thirdly, she uses a dry eraser felt pen, claiming it’s easier to erase the lines after carving.

Her fourth trick is to cover all the cut surfaces with Vaseline as this will keep the pumpkin moist.
Once carved this way, the lantern should last one to two weeks.
The post also advises to sprinkle cinnamon in the top of the pumpkin to make it smell amazing when you add a candle.

Lastly, she pops her pumpkin outside and undercover.
The clip has hundreds of comments with many viewers jumping to try the hacks.
Nichole said: “The cinnamon also helps prevent molding on the inside!”
Someone else wrote: “My mom used to spray hers with Pledge furniture wax.”
Sinead commented: “Just carve it the night before trick or treat. It’s tradition on our house and kinda sets the mood! Pumpkins, movies, and pizza!”
Another fan added: “I’ve always cut from the bottom so the stem is a handle.”
However, others have criticised some of the tips as impractical.
Katie posted: “Isn’t vaseline pretty flammable?”
One person noted: “It’s a great theory… doesn’t work in Texas.”
Jason asked: “Isn’t cinnamon highly flammable?”
Sarah repllied: “Vasalune is flammable too.”
