Waves were left standing rigid in a frozen sea after temperatures plunged to record lows this week.

Locals dubbed the natural phenomenon “surreal”.

Eerie footage shows the waves frozen in time as they stand rigid by the static shoreline on a crisp sunny day.

Waves that previously lapped the shore appear like icy slush on the beach’s golden sand.

The strange phenomenon was filmed near the town of San Sebastián, in Argentine Patagonia, on 25 June.

Despite being located in Argentina’s southernmost province of Tierra del Fuego, residents said it is very uncommon to observe the sea frozen solid during their winter period.

San Sebastián, located on South America’s southern tip, saw one of the year’s coldest days on Tuesday, as reported by What’s the Jam.

The harsh conditions were attributed to a combination of extremely low temperatures and particular climatic conditions that cause the formation of ice in the sea.

Locals described the static waves as “surreal”.

One expert said: “It is a reminder of the impressive force of nature and how the climate can surprise us with such extraordinary phenomena.”
