A single page from an iconic comic that became a movie has sold for over £20,000.

It was drawn by British artist Dave Gibbons for Watchmen and fetched over ten times its estimate.

It was from Issue 11, page 22 of the groundbreaking DC Comics series created with writer Alan Moore.

It carried a pre-sale estimate of £1,000 to £1,800 but quickly surpassed expectations after interest from across the world, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Watchmen, first published in 1986, is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in modern comics.

Its twelve issue run redefined the superhero genre with its layered storytelling and moral complexity.

The series was adapted into a major feature film and an award winning television series, further cementing its cultural impact.

John Anderson, of auctioneer Anderson and Garland, Newcastle upon Tyne, said: “Original pages from Watchmen rarely come to market.

“And when they do they tend to cause quite a stir.

“This result shows the series still has real superpower in the eyes of collectors worldwide.

“It is a reminder that nearly 40 years after publication the impact of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ creation remains as strong as ever and its place in comic book history is firmly secure.”

The artwork realised a total of £20,800.

Dave Gibbons is best known for his collaborations with writer Alan Moore, which include Watchmen and Superman.

He was an artist for British comic 2000 AD for which he contributed a large body of work from its first issue in 1977.
