The creepy remains of children believed to have been “demonic” have been discovered at an anti-vampire burial ground.

Back in the 13th century, precautions were sometimes taken to prevent the dead from rising.

In this case, the children’s heads appeared to have been removed from their bodies.

Their skulls were laid face down, pointing west, and stones were placed on their torsos.

They were also buried in pits without coffins, as reported by What’s The Jam.

“Burying with the face to the ground, cutting off the head or pressing the body with a stone are among the methods used to prevent a person believed to be a demonic being from leaving the grave,” the archaeologist in charge of the research, Dr Stanislaw Golub, said in a Facebook post on 12 September.

“This type of burial falls broadly under the category of ‘revenant’ graves.

“Sometimes, it is described as a ‘vampire’ or ‘anti-vampire’ burial.

“In addition, the burial was most likely marked by two pillars to the east and west, as evidenced by the preserved post holes.”

The bizarre archaeological discovery was made at a site on Góra Chełmska, a ridge near Koszalin in northwestern Poland, the Lublin Provincial Conservator of Monuments said.

They have been dated to the 13th century based on the ground layers they were found in and associated pottery fragments.

The newly uncovered burials have been documented, and the skeletons were excavated from their graves.

The remains are now awaiting anthropological analysis, where archaeologists will gather more insights into the unusual discovery.
