A posh London restaurant has increased the price of the UK’s “most expensive cup of tea” from £7 to £8.50 a cup.

The Colony Grill Room at The Beaumont Hotel in London is not a place to visit without deep pockets.

Despite a packet of 40 Earl Grey teabags costing just £2.50 at ASDA – equating to 6.25p a brew – the establishment charges £8.50 for its Earl Grey and Beaumont Breakfast Blend.

And while it’s a close contender for the title, the Pavyllon London – a Michelin Star restaurant – had previously been reported for flogging a cup for £9.

However, the restaurant is still in first place when it comes to speciality teas.

Thirsty diners will have to shell out even more if they fancy a cup of Red Dragon Black or Yellow Gold Oolong, as the price tag is a staggering £10.

Coffee at the restaurant is equally as eye-watering, costing between £6 and £8 for a pick-me-up espresso.

The breakfast menu has several expensive offerings too, including a £13 orange juice and two eggs and soldiers for £12.

One recent diner took to TripAdvisor to share their outrage at the price of tea, in particular.

Christian Mole wrote: “I’m afraid the pricing here has got completely out of control.

“Breakfast for two earlier this week was £102 for 2: £9 for an apple juice, £8.50 for a white americano or a breakfast tea, and then 15% service slapped on top.

“The food quality, the service and the ambience are all good, but there is no value proposition: pricing is just designed to milk the local clientele.”

Muhannad Qubbaj, another breakfast diner, who rated the atmosphere of the five-star hotel a four out of five, added that “yesterday’s dinner” was on the cutlery.

However, not all diners were left disappointed by their experience, and the restaurant was given a five-star review.

Chona Navarro wrote: “We had a very early breakfast here during our quick trip to London – the food was delicious and the staff superb.

“Definitely recommend getting a serve of the pancakes to share along with your other breakfast choices.”

The Colony Grill Room has been contacted for comment.
