Tesco shoppers were left baffled after self-checkouts appeared to ask for age verification when buying mangoes.

Multiple customers shared photos and stories online after supermarket tills flagged the tropical fruit as an 18+ item, prompting staff approval before purchases could go through.

One Reddit user, posting on the r/tesco forum under the username knkiss, shared a photo of a self-service checkout screen displaying a warning next to a mango purchase.

The shopper joked in the caption: “I got ID’d for Mangos (?!)”

The post quickly sparked hundreds of reactions, with other Tesco shoppers saying they had experienced the same issue in recent days, as reported by Whats The Jam.

One commenter wrote: “Everyone seems to be getting ID’d for Tesco mangos recently.”

Another added: “Had that happen last night on self service. Think 25 check for mangoes.”

Elsewhere in the thread, users turned the apparent glitch into a running joke.

One person quipped: “Good on Tesco for being responsible, we have a real problem with underage mango consumption.”

Another joked: “Can’t be letting the kids get into Mango. It’s a gateway fruit to kiwi, and once they’re on kiwis it’ll be lychees before we know it.”

A second Reddit thread, posted by user gelohussain on the same forum, showed another checkout screen requesting “age approval” for a mango purchase.

Other users replied saying they had also run into the same problem.

“This happened to my partner on Tuesday!” one wrote, while another added: “Happened to me too!”

Tesco said the issue was caused by human error after an incorrect age restriction was briefly applied to one mango product line.

The supermarket confirmed the issue began yesterday, Wednesday (13 May) and has since been corrected.
