Advent calendars have caught the attention of savvy shoppers this year — and not for the right reasons.

Glenn Kennedy, who runs a supermarket deals group on Facebook with almost 290,000 members, recently shared an image of the shelves at his local Morrisons.

It showed the wide range of advent calendars on offer, including options from Lindt, Galaxy and Cadbury.

But the calendars attracted attention for their price tags, with one member even calling for a “boycott”, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Children’s calendars from popular brands such as KitKat, Kinder and Malteasers are on sale under £5.

And despite receiving backlash in the comments, some Cadbury calendars can also be picked up for under a fiver.

But the top-shelf options have caused quite the stir.

Cadbury’s ‘Extra Special Day 24 Calendar’ is on sale for £8, whilst Lindt’s options go up to £12 and Ferrero Rocher’s to £12.50.

Senga commented: “No thanks, something else staying on the shelves! It’ll only get worse if you enable them!”

“Wow they have jumped so much in price . Ridiculous,” said Kath.

Ann added: “Yes please!!!”

“Boycott all cadburys until they get their ratio between price and quantity right,” penned Steven.

Glenn, who lives in Llandudno, Wales, posts regularly in the group and often gets people talking.

After sharing the image of the advent calendars, he posted a picture of McVitie’s Ginger Nuts at Tesco, which are £1.50 for a 250g pack.

He also posted a photo of Tesco’s own version of the biscuits, which are 65p for 300g.

Captioning the post, he said: “A clear example of main brand over charge compared to stores own and budget range, at Tesco.”

Glenn also shared another post featuring chocolate reindeers, writing: “You do have options this Christmas.”

One image shows the famous Lindt Chocolate Reindeer, available to purchase for £3.50, or £3.00 for Clubcard holders.

Another show Tesco Chocolate Hollow Reindeers on sale for 89p.

But in the comments section, shoppers had a lot to say.

When it came to the biscuits, many people said the cheaper versions were just as good.

“Main brands far too expensive – don’t buy anything like this anymore,” Christine added.

But despite being happy to opt for the cheaper version when it came to ginger nuts, shoppers didn’t appear to want to compromise when it came to chocolate.

Tricia commented: “It’s Christmas, so for me Lindt wins hands down.”

Liz agreed: “Got to be Lindt.”
