A rare typed letter from John Lennon to his ex-wife Cynthia has been bought for £18,000.
The Beatles legend told her he had learned to type and asked when he could look after their son, Julian, over the summer holidays.
The letter, dated 22 June 1974, is the only direct correspondence from John to Cynthia after their divorce in 1968.

He had begun a relationship with Yoko Ono.
The letter reads: “Dear Cyn, this is the answer to your letter. I don’t have it with me, so I can’t really answer it.
“As you can see, I learned to type.
“Any way it’s getting near Julian’s holiday.
“I thought I’d ask you when I should send May over for him.

“How long, etc, etc, you could tell me on the phone, I suppose, but I felt like typing.
“Hope the new house is fun. Say ‘hi’ to Helen and gang.”
He signed the letter and drew his trademark self-caricature, as reported on What’s The Jam.

It was sold by Julien’s Auctions in Nashville, Tennessee, US.
A spokesperson said: “A typewritten, signed letter with self-caricature and doodles dated June 22, 1974, from John Lennon to his ex-wife Cynthia.
“Together with a 1991 handwritten note from Cynthia, explaining that the letter was the only direct correspondence from John after the couple’s divorce in 1968.”
Lennon, who died in 1980 aged 40, was married to Cynthia for six years from 1962.
He wed Yoko in 1969.
